What are we looking for?

The Assistant Group Financial Controller position is a high-profile role and we are looking for an experienced candidate. Reporting directly into the European Financial Controller, you will play a lead role in the development of the growing Finance team. You will also work closely with the International Finance Director and the Finance teams in the US and APAC regions.

You will play a pivotal, hands-on role and you will be directly responsible for managing the Cashiering and Accounts Payable teams. Your role will be broad, including treasury functions, advising and guiding partners on the application of the SRA Accounts Rules and being directly responsible for leading external SRA Accounts Rule audit.

This role would suit a good communicator with high levels of interpersonal skills. You will be able to motivate and inspire the Cashiering and Accounts Payable teams and inspire confidence within the Firm. You must be organised and accurate and have the ability to deal with a high volume of work, meeting deadlines under pressure.

We are looking for candidates who are experienced and thrive working within a hands-on role. You will be committed and driven to continue adding value in this role, improving finance processes and systems where necessary. Good system skills including Elite 3E are desirable. Excel skills (pivot tables/v-look ups/sumifs etc) are essential.


Areas of focus and responsibilities

  • Day-to-day managerial responsibility of the London Cashiering and Accounts Payable teams, including recruitment, training and appraisals (interim and annual).
  • Working closely with other senior members of the Finance team, including the Reporting Manager, Revenue Control Manager, Payroll Manager and the Head of Tax.
  • Develop content for and run the Finance induction sessions for new employees and trainees.
  • Contribute to the development of the Finance content on the Firms intranet.
  • Develop strong relationships with our bankers, Directors of Business Services and partners of the Firm. Provide financial assistance and guidance to the budget holders, particularly as part of the budgeting process.
  • Working with the Risk and Compliance team to ensure that we have up to date and robust Business Continuity Plans in place.
  • Treasury management, including drawdowns on the credit facilities and liaising with Finance teams around the network to transfer surplus funds. Also, modelling in respect of interest rate hedges, foreign exchange swaps and cash flow forecasting for London.
  • Preparation of monthly and quarterly management information and covenant packs for bank reporting, including a global cash flow report and integrated balance sheet.
  • Management of the partner capital loan accounts.
  • Manage the calculation and payment of monthly, quarterly and annual commission due to external consultants.
  • Act as the first point of contact for partners in relation to questions about compliance with the SRA Accounts Rules.
  • Lead the annual SAR Accounts Rules audit, owning the relationship with the auditors and managing the audit from start to finish.
  • Distribution to fee earners of annual declaration returns to ensure all necessary information is collected for the SAR Accounts Rules audit.
  • Management of online training courses to be completed by Finance and fee earners in respect of the SRA Accounts Rules.
  • Assist fee earners in their compliance with regulatory requirements and in particular the SAR Accounts Rules. Includes circulation of quarterly reports of client balances and follow up to ensure that client money is returned promptly to the client as soon as there is no longer any proper reason to hold those funds.
  • Review of European client bank reconciliations and providing the information needed for sign off by the COFA.
  • Ad hoc projects and reports as required, including representing Finance on project teams formed to ensure the smooth financial integration of new areas of operation, both in the UK and globally.

Skills and attributes

  • Professionally qualified (ACA, ACCA) accountant with minimum 5-year PQE
  • Legal sector experience is highly desired
  • Ability to effectively prioritise and delegate to ensure all deadlines are met
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Highly PC literate, especially Excel
  • Previous experience with Elite Enterprise and/or Elite 3E highly desirable, particularly the implementation of Elite 3E
  • Experience of Chrome River advantageous
  • Commercial aptitude with a modern, pro-active approach
  • Excellent communicator and manager with high levels of interpersonal skills and the ability to lead & inspire others
  • Ability to inspire confidence throughout the Firm
