The Docketing Clerk will assist attorneys with all aspects of patent and trademark registration and docketing.  

Scope of Responsibility

The Docketing Clerk at Withers Bergman is responsible for preparing trademark, patent, and copyright applications, assisting with intellectual property litigation and docketing, and conducting related intellectual property research.

Primary Functions

  • Responsible for the creation, revision, and filing of patent documents; reviewing and maintaining a docket; and managing all forms of client communication
  • Assist attorneys in the clearance and prosecution of U.S. and foreign trademark
  • Communicate with internal business units with respect to trademark matters
  • Assist with formation of corporations, mergers and acquisitions, and other corporate transactions
  • Review and maintain contracts and non-disclosure agreements.
  • Organize, manage, and file corporate filings.
  • Assist in the implementation and administration of legal department governance policies and processes.
  • Manage and administer corporate contract files.

Specific Skills Required

  1. Must possess strong technical skills, such as typing, and have a good working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint 2003 and 2010 as well as programs such as FileSite/iManage and Elite.
  2. Solid command of the English language including excellent spelling, grammar, punctuation, form and style.
  3. Strong communication skills: the ability to express self effectively, both orally and in writing.
  4. Interpersonal skills: the ability to establish effective working relationships with colleagues
  5. Previous experience with document management systems and electronic organizational filing methods preferred.
  6. Familiarity with legal terminology pertinent to the areas of assignment.
  7. Ability to prioritize and multitask effectively.
  8. Ability to work both as a team as well as independently.
  9. Previous experience with intellectual property matters, including patent and trademark matters, is a plus.

     10.    Must have knowledge of USPTO rules and procedures.

Experience Required:

  • 3+ years of experience in Intellectual Property, Trademark and Patent, or transactional work within a law firm, is required.
  • 2+ years of legal industry experience, preferably within a midsized or large law firm’s intellectual property or litigation practice group.
  • Experience with corporate, securities and corporate governance a plus.

Education Requirements: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree strongly preferred.
