The Role

Withers is currently recruiting for a junior associate to join our tax-exempt organizations practice within the firm’s Charities & Philanthropy practice.  This position offers an opportunity to work on diverse matters for tax-exempt organizations, including public charities, private foundations, and social welfare organizations, with a focus on tax, nonprofit corporation laws, and regulatory compliance.  Our Charities and Philanthropy practice additionally counsels individuals on accomplishing their philanthropic and/or social impact objectives. 

Withers' Charities & Philanthropy practice is distinguished by its focus on international issues facing both donors and charitable and other tax-exempt organizations, including cross-border giving and fundraising, issues connected to overseas operations and maintaining foreign affiliate organizations, and the establishment of ‘dual qualified' charity structures.  The New York practice routinely collaborates with Withers lawyers in London, Singapore and elsewhere, as well as works with local counsel in other jurisdictions.

This role will be based in the New York office.

The successful candidate will have:

  • ·      Demonstrated interest in and commitment to the nonprofit sector.
  • ·       Experience researching tax matters.
  • ·       Interest in or relevant knowledge of state nonprofit corporation laws, complex organizational structuring, as well as best practices in nonprofit governance.

Key Skills and Experience

  • Strong academic credentials (J.D. required);
  • Between 1 – 3 years of experience practicing in or coursework in exempt organizations, tax, and corporate law.  Recent law school graduates are encouraged to apply.
  • Bar membership (in good standing) required in New York or, for recent graduates, New York bar exam results pending;
  • Excellent drafting, writing, research and communication skills;
  • Strong project management with an ability to prioritize;
  • Analytical ability and intellectual curiosity;
  • Communication skills;
  • Attention to detail; and
  • Team Player

For New York, the expected salary range for this position is between $170,000 and $205,000. The actual compensation will be determined based on experience and other factors permitted by law.
